Phoebe the dog chills out with Bea the catTraining of your dog is customized to meet your unique needs and goals.

We use many methods to train your beloved dog or puppy.   What we do amazes our clients.  We take your out of control, wild and badly behaving dog that does not do what you want, and turn them into lovely companions, all without yelling or using force. We also love working with dogs that aren't out of control, but who need to learn to listen to their owners.

One of the very popular methods that we use is the Force Free Method™, developed by Marc Goldberg.  "The ForceFree Method™ is an intuitive system of training that makes sense to both people and dogs. Effective and gentle, the training method works WITH the dog’s instincts rather than against them. We achieve off leash reliability, even with distractions, amazingly fast. Most dogs perceive the training as simple "pack cooperation" and play. Therefore, they quickly shed rebellious behavior, and give you more focus than you imagined possible. Doesn't that sound like more fun than correction after correction?"

We combine the ForceFree Method™ with the E-Touch Method, developed by Martin Deeley.  Extensive training has been done with Martin on the gentle use of this method, and we love watching dogs transform their behavior almost overnight. It is profound, and we are proud to be the only training organization in the San Francisco Bay area that offers this choice.

Training may include, with your request, training for good behavior in cars, trucks, even private planes and total off leash reliability on the beach and with horses. Your dog will stay with us at The Dog House Inn in Gilroy.  They will go hiking with us, to the beach with us, and hang out at local coffee shops with us.  They will learn how to behave in public, as well as in a home. We will customize a blog of your dog's training experience so you can follow along. Once training is complete, you will be asked to participate in transferring your dog back to you. This may take a day or two, depending on the problems your dog presented with. Our trainers will show you how to maintain your dog's excellent behavior and new commands

Mack, heart of gold
Mack, now a pleasure to be aroundOur 3 year old lab Mack (also referred to as a “Marley” by friends) has a heart of gold but weighs 90 lbs and had no idea how rambunctious he was. He began terrorizing our 6 year old female with his style of play and everything in our home became “Mack’s”. He slept in the bed, chewed whatever he wanted to, jumped on guests and just became a nuisance. We couldn’t walk him because he lunged and jumped in circles. Once almost pulling my arm out the socket while I was pregnant. He had been through 3 obedience training courses and we even hired a private trainer. Of course he played the perfect pupil and had everyone fooled, by the time he was home he was back to his bad behavior. We tried socializing him, but he was a bully, territorial and we feared he may bite, so he was house ridden. Although with all his problems, Mack had a heart of gold, was adored by family and friends and we loved him.

I came across the website for Dog Behavior Rehab and was hopeful that Mr. Mack could be rehabilitated. Literally the minute Sherry walked in the door, Mack knew he had met his match. She spent a few hours assessing our home and it was decided that Mack needed to stay with Sherry for a few weeks for the Board and Train program. However, our case was different and Mack attended a cross country trip Sherry and friends had planned, visiting many dog trainers across the country. Sherry kept a daily blog of Mack and sent pictures of their travels and adventures. Three weeks later she returned to us a dog that we remembered as a torment, but who walked in the door calmly and obeyed our commands. It’s been several months since Mack’s adventure with Sherry and he has become a wonderful companion to our family. No longer do we chase or yell at him. He now walks off leash around the neighborhood and is a pleasure to have around when we entertain. Sherry became a member of our extended family and we appreciate her hard work and daily dedication to discipline our beloved Mr. Mack. I have recommended Sherry Boyer and Dog Behavior Rehab to many people. She is our Dog Whisperer!!!!

The story of Gideon.
Gideon came to us from Juneau, Alaska in the fall of 2007.  He had been deemed dangerous and vicious by Animal Control due to 2 bites that were considered unprovoked.  His owner brought him to us on a very orange leash and collar, imprinted with “Danger” all over them. He also had a huge tag hanging off the collar, identifying him as a dangerous and vicious dog.  Since he arrived around Halloween, the people at the airport and rental car agency thought this was his Halloween costume! Gideon is a gorgeous pure white pit bull.  He is super friendly, except when people approach his “children” (the owner’s sons), when he can be growly.  The bite episodes will not be discussed here.

Gideon waits ever so patiently for permission to eat his dinnerWe found Gideon to be quite delightful, just lacking in the impulse control department. Typical of as his breed, he can be very exuberant in his greetings of people that he knows, which means it’s hard for him to not jump up to kiss people in the face. As you can imagine, not all people like to be jumped up on by a big boy like him. We worked with him on controlling these impulses, and found him to be very amenable to training. When he left us, he was walking at a heel, not pulling on leash at all, sitting, downing and staying when asked for long periods of time, even with people out of sight. He did very very well.  We also started to train Gideon on pulling weight, which was an owner request. They spend a good share of their free time on ATV’s, and Gideon is the perfect dog to help carry some of his own provisions in to the backcountry. We are very confident that Gideon’s owner is dedicated to follow-through, and dedicated to getting him re-classified.  We are looking forward to that day!!

Gideon is back in Juneau now, but not out of hot water yet. He must go through a re-classification there, which means he must pass his Canine Good Citizen test, in Alaska. We are sure he will do fine; however, as you will read below, the problem will be whether he will actually be allowed and/or able to take the test. We will update the website as Gideon goes through his tests in what we hope is the near future.

Gideon, on the right, not so sure that being a reindeer is all that excitingWhat Gideon’s owner says:
”Things are going good here.  Gideon is doing good on most everything and is doing LOADS better on everything.  He still freaks out when people come over, and REALLY wants to run them down.  Not agressive just VERY HAPPY.  I have been making him down and stay, which he does without question, but I have been forced to stand on his leash to keep him from rushing the door when it opens with someone outside it.  He is getting better but it is still an issue.

He has done very well with the leave it command, and as long as I catch him early will leave most anything.  Our back neighbors have a cat and I have been able to get Gideon to walk past him (on the other side of the fence that is) with no more than a glance.  He still will growl at noises and people he doesn’t know or can't see, but will "Leave It" when I tell him to.

Gideon learns to stay on his bed With his skin issues I have not been able to get him out as much as I would like but I just got him booties and if I can keep him from taking them off, we should be able to get out more.  I also just got a treadmill for him so I will begin working him on that soon.

He is a CRAZY PULLING MACHINE!  I took him out the other day and had his leash hooked to the front of my ATV.  I was letting him lead the way, but he was not really pulling, just walking with me riding.  I parked my ATV and turned it off but forgot to put it in gear.  He pulled it down the road to where my truck was without me even noticing it until he was most of the way there.  Just FYI, my ATV weighs 600 pounds, without any gas, oil or any of the supplies I have attached to it.  The sled I got for him should be here soon.  I am looking forward to seeing what he can do.

I finally got in contact with the local Kennel Club about the CGC and I was right, they WILL NOT allow Gideon to take the class OR the Test.  Because of insurance issues with his "Dangerous" designation.  The person who administers the test contacted me and said that if we can get the Humane society to "Sponsor" a class and test then she would be willing to do the testing.  So that is my next hurdle.  She recommended that, if the Humane Society will not sponsor the testing, I request a variance on the regulations and have him tested somewhere out of town.  So I may need to bring him South again to get tested.”
