Our Mission and Purpose
"It's great to know that there are people out there like you specializing in dog rehab and not just dog obedience. It's certainly needed in the rescue world!"
— Monica Rua, President of Animal Friends Rescue Project of Pacific Grove.
Dog Behavior Rehab uses natural methods to neutralize behavioral issues. Our main focus is to rehabilitate dogs and train their people. Our goal is success for both the owner and pet. Happiness is a peaceful, well-balanced dog that the family members, other pets and neighbors can feel safe around. "Behavior problems are the largest preventable cause of death in dogs in the United States" says Steve Appelbaum, President of Animal Behavior College. "We know that 40 to 70 percent of all dogs in animal shelters are there because of untreated behavior problems." The Dog Behavior Rehab team is expert at training owners to quickly and easily work with their dogs in ways that dogs understand.
We believe it is wrong for so many dogs to lose their lives every year in shelters and homes across the country because of seemingly irresolvable behavior issues. Many of us have adopted rescue dogs to 'save' them only to discover later that serious problems exist. What started as an act of kindness can end with you giving your 'troubles' to others, a lawsuit and/or a euthanized family pet.
We are all long time students of dog behavior. Linda and Sherry were guests of Gayle Thompson, former Executive Assistant to Cesar Millan at the Dog Psychology Center of Los Angeles in 2005, and were able to spend a week watching Cesar work with his pack. We have also been guests of Cheri Lucas of Second Chance at Love Humane Society in Templeton, CA. Cheri Lucas is one of three people to have trained directly with Cesar Millan. Check out the amazing work she does at www.secondchancelove.org.
The Dog Behavior Rehab system is based on the concepts of dog psychology. We are trained in various behavioral change methods and regularly attend seminars and conferences to update that training. We select the method that we feel will be best for you and your dog, and we believe strongly that no one method is the best for every dog. We get results with simple and fast methods, and are referred by many area veterinarians because our system truly works.
Sherry Boyer
Sherry Boyer is the director of Dog Behavior Rehab, and a Professional member of the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP). Sherry has literally traveled the globe to learn about different dog behavior rehabilitation methods. She is a dog psychology communications expert, acting as an interpreter and translator to train both you and your dog. Sherry’s previous life in Japan as a university instructor and Japanese language translator seems to have nothing to do with the world of dogs, yet has everything to do with communicating successfully with beings who do not speak the same language.
Sherry has studied extensively with Martin Deeley and his wife Pat Trichter. Martin is the Past President and current Executive Director of the IACP. She continues her studies with Martin and Pat as often as possible. Sherry is certified in the E-Touch Method (www.MartinDeeley.com), and will obtain Advanced Certification in October 2008
Sherry is also proud to announce that she is a certified Force Free Method Trainer, studying with Marc Goldberg of www.chicagodogtrainer.com in 2007. The combination of the E-Touch Method and the Force Free method is very powerful, and enhances all aspects of the Dog Behavior Rehab system.
For over two years, Sherry was fortunate to intern under Kathy Kern of the Animal Fitness Center, learning in-depth her proprietary method of Water Exercise with Motion Massage™. Kathy is the pioneer of canine hydrotherapy and invented this method of weightless massage in motion in a warm pool. Sherry is one of a handful of people in the USA to carry on her powerful and profound work. During this time, she gained deep insight into many issues surrounding the owner/dog dynamic and how some of the inherent miscommunication can lead to true behavior problems with the dogs.
Sherry has continued her studies in canine bodywork with Maryna Ozuna and the Canine Kinaesthetics method, and is a certified Canine Kinaesthetics (www.dogbodycare.com) Practitioner. This work is profound, and Sherry continues her studies with Ms. Ozuna as often as possible. Often, the correlation between a bad doggy attitude and discomfort and pain is undeniable. This work helps immensely in a dog being able to move forward successfully in their behavioral rehabilitation.
Somewhere along the way, she studied to be a Vet Tech, interning with the amazing Dr. Roush of San Jose as an orthopedic surgical technician. She loved working with Dr. Roush and his team; however she realized that her heart was more in the world of working with “dogs behaving badly,” rather than the veterinary world.
Sherry has worked with over a thousand dogs and knows that many behavior problems are easily corrected using the proper tools. She loves to see the transformation that takes place with dogs and their people when they begin to understand dog psychology.
Sherry is married to Hans, who is a self-professed “Cat Guy.” They have a balanced pack of 5 dogs- Hootie, Nala, Phoebe, Daisy Sue and Bridget; and 7 cats- Fat Boy, Girly Girl, Sascha, Bob, Emma, Bea and Fred. Hans would like you to know that of all the cats in the “pride,” only Bob, Emma, Bea and now Fred are qualified to train dogs.
Since July of 2007, Sherry has been studying with Kayce Cover, founder of SynAlia Training Systems. Due to the amazing results she had using this system of communication with a super aggressive Board and Train dog, Sherry plans to continue her studies with Kayce. The plan is to become a certified SATS trainer sometime in the Spring of 2008. Kayce is the keynote speaker at the 2008 IACP conference. Check out Kayce’s work on her website at www.synalia.com. Sherry: “When I saw a video of Kayce getting a rhinoceros to agree to have his abscessed horn flushed in approximately 15 minutes within meeting her, I knew I had to listen. We are going to have some fun with this!!”
Rommey Kay
We are pleased to have Rommey join our team of behavior consultants. Rommey has a phenomenal background with dogs. She is always learning and studying new methods with the goal to be able to gently neutralize correctable behavior difficulties.
She has been a veterinary technician for 7 years, pet store manager for 5 years, dog trainer, pet sitter and groomer. She has also been boarding dogs for over 4 years.
Rommey has had pets all her life; in fact dogs would follow her home from anywhere and everywhere. Rommey is passionate about dogs, especially when educating families and their children how to be safe around their family pets.
She is one of a small group of people we have worked with that has the talent, skills and background to be part of Dog Behavior Rehab. We have been especially impressed by her quick assessment of the dog's core difficulties and the different ways she is able to interact with the owner and family to find a successful solution.
Rommey is now the Director of Operations for Dog Behavior Rehab’s new facility: The Dog House Inn of Gilroy. Her competence and skill amaze us all, and we are proud to be associated with her.
Rommey is a Professional Member of the International Association of Canine Professionals. She is also a Professional Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).
Linda Mower
Linda Mower is sadly no longer with Dog Behavior Rehab due to health reasons. Her contribution to our business and system were invaluable, and we have been sad to see her leave. Dog Behavior Rehab would not exist without Linda, and we are grateful for her insights, humor and dedication.
